What the 421A exam is
The 421A exam is the certifying exam for Heavy Duty Equipment Technician in Ontario. It is the Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician exam: 135 multiple-choice questions based on the Red Seal Occupational Standard. Passing it leads to your Certificate of Qualification from Skilled Trades Ontario, with the Red Seal endorsement.
Heavy Duty Equipment Technician is a non-compulsory (voluntary) trade in Ontario under the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021. The apprenticeship is generally 7,000 hours: 6,280 hours on the job and 720 hours of in-school training over three levels. The Certificate of Qualification does not need to be renewed.
| Part of the exam | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Questions | 135 multiple-choice questions |
| Options | Four choices (A to D), exactly one correct |
| Writing time | Four hours |
| Pass mark | 70% |
| Supplied at the exam | An acronym list, and a calculator if needed |
| Exam fee in Ontario | $150 plus HST, paid on the Skilled Trades Ontario Portal |
| If you do not pass | A 30-day wait before you can rewrite, and the fee is paid again |
This exam leans heavily on diagnosis. The Red Seal program says about 5 to 15% of questions test knowledge and recall, 45 to 55% test procedures and application, and 35 to 45% test critical thinking. Four hours for 135 questions gives you under two minutes a question.
How the exam is weighted
The official exam breakdown splits the 135 questions across nine major work activities. Our nine sections follow the same activities, and our 135-question mock exams use the same weighting.
| Major work activity | Red Seal questions |
|---|---|
| A. Common occupational skills | 10 |
| B. Engines and supporting systems | 20 |
| C. Steering, suspension, brakes, undercarriage and wheels | 16 |
| D. Electrical and electronic systems | 25 |
| E. Drivetrain systems | 17 |
| F. Environmental control systems | 9 |
| G. Hydraulic, hydrostatic and pneumatic systems | 25 |
| H. Structural components, operator stations and attachments | 9 |
| I. Hybrid and all-electric equipment | 4 |
Electrical and electronic systems and hydraulic, hydrostatic and pneumatic systems carry 25 questions each, more than a third of the exam together.
What to be confident with
- Hydraulics. Force = pressure x area, cylinder area from the bore, flow and speed, relief, open and closed centre, load sensing, hydrostatic loops and case drain.
- Electrical. Ohm's law, series and parallel circuits, voltage drop testing, batteries, charging and starting, J1939 networks and fault codes.
- Engines and emissions. Diesel fuel systems, turbochargers, cooling, lubrication, DOC, DPF, SCR and EGR.
- Drivetrain. Torque converters, powershift transmissions, differentials, gear and planetary ratios, final drives.
How to prepare
Start with the Red Seal exam breakdown and self-assessment to find your weaker areas. Because so many questions test diagnosis, practise reasoning from symptoms to causes, not only recalling facts. Drill one section at a time here, read every explanation, and finish with full timed mocks of 135 questions in four hours. Aim well above 70% in practice.

Before working under a raised loader arm or dump body, what must you do?
- Rely on the hydraulic cylinders to hold it up
- Lower it or block it with the proper support
- Leave the engine running so you can lower it quickly
- Ask the operator to keep the control lever in hold
Answer: B, Lower it or block it with the proper support. Hydraulic systems can leak down or fail. Lower the attachment to the ground or install the manufacturer's lock or a rated mechanical support before working under it, and lock out the machine.
How does a diesel engine ignite its fuel?
- Heat of compression
- A spark plug firing
- A glow plug at all times
- An electric arc in the injector
Answer: A, Heat of compression. Diesel engines compress air until it is hot enough to ignite the injected fuel. Glow plugs or grid heaters only help with cold starting.
What is the main effect of a crawler track adjusted too tight?
- The track throwing off the idler
- Less engine power needed to travel
- Better traction on soft ground
- Fast pin and sprocket wear
Answer: D, Fast pin and sprocket wear. A tight track loads the pins, bushings, sprockets and idlers, wearing them quickly and wasting power. Too loose a track can come off. Set sag to the manufacturer's spec for the ground conditions.
