What the Class 7 knowledge test is

The Class 7 learner's licence is the first step in Alberta's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. To get it, you must be at least 14 (with a parent's or guardian's consent if you are under 18) and pass a knowledge test on Alberta's traffic laws and road signs, plus a separate vision test. You take the test at an Alberta registry agent office.

Test format at a glance

Part of the testWhat to expect
Questions30 multiple-choice questions, one correct answer each
Pass mark25 correct out of 30 (about 83%)
Time limitNot published by the Government of Alberta
CostThe fee is not published on alberta.ca. You pay it at the registry agent for each attempt.
RetakesYou can take the test once per day, and pay for each attempt
LanguagesOffered in 25 languages, with audio narration through headphones. An oral test, read aloud in English by a registry agent or through a sign language interpreter, is also available.

Many questions are written as short driving situations. Alberta does not publish a table of topic weightings, so our sections follow the Alberta Driver's Guide and the Use of Highway and Rules of the Road Regulation.

How our sign questions work

The real test shows road signs as pictures. Our site does not use images, so every sign question describes the sign in words: its shape, colour and symbol. Learning signs this way builds the habit the test rewards. The vision test cannot be practised as written questions, so it is left out.

Rules worth knowing

  • Stopped vehicles with flashing lamps. Since September 1, 2023, when you pass a stopped vehicle with flashing lamps, you must move into a farther lane when one is available and it is safe. Otherwise, slow to 60 km/h, or the posted limit if it is lower.
  • Demerit points. A Class 7 or Class 5 GDL licence is suspended for one month at 8 or more demerit points within two years.
  • Distracted driving. The penalty is a $390 fine and 3 demerit points.
  • Leaving GDL. Since April 1, 2023, the advanced road test is no longer needed to exit the Graduated Driver Licensing program.

How to prepare

Read the Alberta Driver's Guide, then practise one section at a time, starting with road signs and right of way. Read every explanation, including for the questions you got right, because many items test an exact rule or number. With only 30 questions and 25 needed to pass, you can miss at most 5, so take the 30-question mock until you score 27 or more every time.

Checked against the Traffic Safety Act, its regulations and alberta.ca on October 30, 2026. Last reviewed: October 2026.

Aptitude Tests Canada is an independent practice platform. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Government of Alberta or any registry agent. Our questions are original practice questions, not real test questions.

A 15-year-old wants to apply for a Class 7 learner's licence. What must they provide besides passing the tests?
  1. A letter from their school principal
  2. Proof that they own an insured vehicle
  3. Proof of a completed driving course
  4. Consent from a parent or guardian

Answer: D, Consent from a parent or guardian. Applicants under 18 need parental or guardian consent to get a Class 7 licence (alberta.ca, Steps to getting a driver's licence; AR 320/2002, s. 11).

You see a red eight-sided sign with white letters. What must you do?
  1. Come to a complete stop, then go when safe
  2. Slow down and yield only if traffic is near
  3. Prepare for an all-way stop further ahead
  4. Stop only if a vehicle is coming from the left

Answer: A, Come to a complete stop, then go when safe. The octagonal red sign is a stop sign; you must stop fully and proceed only after yielding to vehicles and pedestrians (Use of Highway and Rules of the Road Regulation, AR 304/2002, s. 38).

You are stopped at a red light and want to turn right. What does Alberta law allow?
  1. Turn only if a green arrow is also showing
  2. Wait for the light to turn green before turning
  3. Turn after stopping and yielding, unless a sign prohibits it
  4. Turn without stopping if no vehicles are coming

Answer: C, Turn after stopping and yielding, unless a sign prohibits it. A right turn on red is allowed after a full stop and yielding to pedestrians and vehicles, unless a traffic control device prohibits it (AR 304/2002, s. 54(2)).
